Golf Courses

UK Golf CoursesThere are thousands of golf courses across the UK.

All golf courses consist of a series of holes, a teeing area, fairway, rough and hazards. Some golf courses have 18 holes, some only have 9 holes but most golf courses will have 18 holes.

Teeing area
- The first section of every hole has a teeing area or tee-box. There is usually more than one tee-box, each one a different distance from the hole.

Fairway
- The area of the golf course between the tee box and the putting green is known as the fairway. The grass of the fairway is generally cut short and evenly making it easier to play on.

Rough
- The area of the golf course between the fairway and the out-of-bounds marker and between the fairway and green is called the rough, the grass is cut higher than the fairway, making it harder to play on.

Hazards
– There will be hazards on all golf courses. Hazards include water hazards such as a river or a lake, bunkers or sand traps, and overgrown vegetation.

Putting Green
– The grass of the putting green, usually just called The Green, is cut very short so that a ball can roll smoothly.
